The Iliad and Oedipus the King deal with prophecies that will eventually ruin multiple peoples lives. In The Iliad there is Achilles, a great warrior who is loved by many but is greatly flawed. In Oedipus the King, The king of Thebes, Oedipus is a loyal king to his city and a very motivated man. What both these characters have in common is that they are both destined to fall no matter how they live their lives. Achilles will be loved by all, but live a short life and Oedipus will kill his father and marry his mother. Even though they will suffer, Achilles and Oedipus will reach self knowledge on whats right and wrong and will also achieve a new level of wisdom that readers would have not expected. Achilles, son of Thetis and Peleus and destined to be a great warrior but have a short life. That doesn t stop him from being the best around and most loved by everyone. Achilles knows what he is capable of and flaunts it. Even though his life may have seemed perfect, Achilles was greatly f lawed. He had the rage of a bull, if anyone ever got on his bad side he would explode. Readers see a lot of his rage especially in the first book when he is arguing with Agamemnon.We get to know Achilles early on, and see he is not one to mess with. But as the story goes on, Achilles becomes a more subtle character and then angry again after the death of his best friend. It is finally when he finds peace within himself that he is fully satisfied with life.
